Just what is “Web Development“?

I mean, it could be anything, right?  Well, anything web related?

The short answer to this commonly asked question is yes, but yes doesn’t give the full scope of everything that it entails.

There are a number of components that go into making a website, an online shopping cart, a blog, or any other entity that exists on the web.  There has to be a design, the design then has to be translated into functionality, and then the functionality has to be programmed so a visitor checking it out has a seamless time finding their way around the site.  What can be confusing is that Web Development is both each individual part, and it is also the sum of these parts.

So what does this mean for me?

It means that whatever problem you need a solution for in the web world probably falls under the category of Web Development.  Do you need a website built from scratch for your design portfolio?  That’s web development.  Do you need a contact form added to your already existing Record Store’s website?  That’s web development.  Do you need a plugin built for your WordPress blog?  That’s web development.  Do you… well… you get the idea.
